Synopsis A film about opal mining. In the desert of South Australia lies the village Coober Pedy, with a population of 3,500 and a Greek Community which was formed in the fifties, during the big immigrant wave from Greece to Australia. At the time there was no village and the 50-60 degree heat presented a serious problem. The Greeks began digging their homes underground, as others had done on the island of Santorini in Greece and in Cappadocia, Asia Minor. These 'dugouts' maintain a temperature of 23-25 degrees all year round. The film documents the Greek opal miners as they tell their stories, while at the same time it explores the emotions and the lifestyle of these people who remain children since they consider opal mining more a game that must not end rather than a profession.
